What formalities do they need to take care of, and what needs to be arranged much sooner?
First Holy Communion in the United Kingdom—Formalities
The First Holy Communion ceremony in the United Kingdom is a bit different than in Poland. While in Poland every child attending religious education classes at school is prepared for the ceremony, in the UK parents must take care of this themselves. If your child attends a British public school and you wish for them to receive the sacrament, you must take care of it yourselves—that is, handle all the formalities. First, you must enroll your child in a preparatory course, offered by both British and Polish parishes. Registration begins as early as September. Depending on your preferences, traditions, and other circumstances, you must decide whether your child will receive First Communion in a Polish church or an English church. Both options have their supporters. Those who plan to settle permanently in the United Kingdom place particular emphasis on assimilation, which is why their children receive the sacrament in an English parish.
Preparations for First Holy Communion in the United Kingdom
Each parish has its own rules regarding attire, preparatory meetings, the requirements for receiving the sacrament, and the date of the ceremony. Parents usually invite guests not only for lunch but also for coffee and cake, and often for dinner as well. In the United Kingdom, after the church ceremony, guests usually go for coffee and cake, and somewhat less often for lunch. Of course, among Poles living in the UK, it is customary to hold the celebration in the Polish style—that is, a bit more elegantly and meticulously. After all, in keeping with our tradition, following the First Holy Communion ceremony in church, it is customary to properly host the guests and ensure a pleasant atmosphere that is also appropriate for this important day.
Interestingly, “White Week” is not observed in the United Kingdom. The entire celebration concludes on the day of First Holy Communion. Of course, these arrangements may vary depending on the parish and its local customs.

Importantly, every parent can decide for themselves whether their child will receive the sacrament in a Polish or an English parish. If they choose the former, the entire ceremony will likely resemble the one familiar from their homeland. If they opt for an English parish, they can expect the Mass and accompanying festivities to be somewhat more modest.
