Baptism—What Accessories Do You Need to Buy?

(0)

Holy Baptism is an extremely important ceremony for both the child and his or her parents. It is a religious ceremony, but many people choose to have it out of tradition and because of the values instilled in them at home. A child’s baptism is primarily associated with the sacrament the child receives, though it is often accompanied by a small family celebration as well.

Before you start planning your child’s baptism, be sure to check what supplies you’ll need!

What documents are required for a child’s baptism?

When asked what’s needed for a baptism, the first answer should be a list of documents. Unfortunately, even with sacraments performed under the church’s auspices, we can’t avoid the paperwork. The documents required for a child’s baptism are:

• a copy of the child’s birth certificate, which can be obtained from the Civil Registry Office,

• if the parents were married in a parish other than the one where they plan to have their child baptized, a church marriage certificate will be required,

• the godparents’ information,

• certificates confirming that confession has been made,

• certificates from the godparents stating that they are believers and practicing Catholics.

A baptismal gown and ceremonial clothing for the child

Holy Baptism is a very important sacrament in which the main participants are the parents, the godparents, and the child—who is carried into the church to become a full member of the Catholic community.

A very important element that must not be forgotten is the baptismal gown. It is usually put on at a specific moment during the sacrament, as directed by the priest. Tradition dictates that the godmother is responsible for purchasing the baptismal gown. These days, many people are moving away from this custom to avoid placing the financial burden on the godmother; however, the best approach is simply to discuss the matter and agree on who will buy what. Christening gowns come in many varieties. They can be fairly versatile, featuring standard, timeless embroidery or a print. These days, many people opt for personalized gowns. They may include the child’s name as well as the date of the ceremony. You can also opt for colorful accents—pink for a girl and blue for a boy.

The most popular choices are a gown with a blue cross for a boy and a gown with a pink cross for a girl.

What do you need for a baptism? Every child being baptized should be dressed appropriately. The same goes for the parents and godparents. This sacrament calls for solemnity as well as elegant attire. So it’s no wonder that when planning this special day, parents spend a lot of time searching for the right outfit, both in brick-and-mortar stores and online. For a girl, it’s best to go with a classic choice: a white or powder-pink dress. During colder weather, she can also wear tights, a sweater or a light coat, and a hat. If it’s warm, a thin sweater and a headband will suffice. It’s no longer necessary to dress children in white swaddling clothes. A boy being carried to his baptism can be dressed in a specially tailored children’s suit or a onesie that merely features a print resembling a suit or an elegant shirt. Of course, don’t forget shoes, a hat, and an outer layer. In the fall, this might be a little coat or a lighter jacket, while in the winter, a thicker coat is usually the choice.

The baptismal candle provided by the godfather

It is the godmother’s duty to provide the christening gown, while the godfather is responsible for preparing the candle. This is an essential element; without it, the ceremony cannot take place. It’s best to choose a traditional baptismal candle, which has the appropriate aesthetic for the occasion.

There is a very wide selection of candles on the market. In the product ranges of various manufacturers, you’ll find both versatile candles and more personal, commemorative ones that are perfect for customization. You can easily have the child’s name, date of birth, or date of the baptism engraved on this type of candle. Sometimes, the godfather or parents even want to include a photo of the child on the candle, and this is certainly possible.

What else should you consider when planning a christening celebration?

Baptism isn’t just the sacrament itself, but often includes a celebration afterward, such as a family dinner or a slightly larger gathering. So if you’re planning a party, feel free to add more fantastic touches, such as:

• invitations—these are necessary if you plan to invite guests this way. You can also do this by phone on behalf of the child, but paper invitations seem more elegant and suited to the solemnity of the occasion,

• a blanket—when it’s cold outside, it’s a good idea to have an extra blanket for the baby. If you choose white, you’ll have the perfect accessory for the day.

• Photo shoot – Wondering how to capture this special day? Be sure to hire a photographer. This is the only way to get the most professional photos and a wonderful keepsake with your little one as the star.
