A First Communion dress or a liturgical alb—which one should you choose?

The choice between a First Communion dress and a liturgical alb is not an obvious one for many parents. We will therefore outline the pros and cons of each option.

To resolve any doubts, let’s start by analyzing the definition of the word “alba.” “Alba” derives from its white color: the Latin word *albus* means white. The alba is a symbol of the purity of the soul in a state of sanctifying grace. An alb is a long, simple tunic with long, wide sleeves that reaches to the ankles. An integral part of the liturgical alb is the cingulum—a belt or thick cord with tassels at both ends used to tie the alb at the waist.

Thus, the alb is characterized by two elements—its construction and its color. However, only one of these elements distinguishes dresses from albs. Communion albs are based on a simple design with box pleats running the entire length of the alb. Dresses, on the other hand, are based on a cut that emphasizes the figure and are more form-fitting.

Liturgical Albs

An undeniable advantage of First Communion albs is their versatility. A liturgical alb is a garment worn loosely (which is why the use of a cingulum is also necessary for practical reasons). Additionally, the design of the albs features vertical box pleats along the entire length, both in the front and back. By combining these two elements, we obtain a liturgical garment with considerable ease of movement—and thus one that is very versatile to wear. Taking measurements for liturgical albs is essentially limited to the chest circumference and the length of the alb.

An additional advantage of liturgical albs is their visual consistency. Some albs are offered in a unisex style, meaning the designs can be worn by both boys and girls. This is an additional visual benefit—all children dressed in identical liturgical albs during a First Holy Communion ceremony look impressive as a group.

Liturgical albs are also an excellent solution for concealing figure imperfections. So if your child is self-conscious about their figure, an alb will certainly help to conceal it somewhat.

Another advantage of liturgical albs is their price—undoubtedly lower than that of dresses, which is also a significant factor for a large number of customers.

First Communion Dresses

First Communion dresses deserve their own book, not just a blog post. The 21st century has brought a more liberal approach from priests regarding First Communion attire, so there are increasingly more alternative options available. You’ll find both short and long First Communion dresses—richly embellished with chiffon and lace, as well as minimalist and elegant styles. The selection is truly vast.

Most often, these are dresses fitted at the waist, with a half-circle or full-circle skirt and delicate, short sleeves. However, there are exceptions to this basic style—dresses with sleeveless designs, 3/4 sleeves, bell sleeves, or simple long sleeves.

Alba Dresses

Albe-style dresses are a separate, recently established category of liturgical clothing for girls. They are becoming increasingly popular because they satisfy the needs of both sides—priests, who expect the ceremony to have a liturgical character, and parents, who are looking for styles similar to elegant dresses.

Alba or dress?

The decision rests solely with the parent. However, as the manufacturer, we suggest taking into account the fact that First Holy Communion is a unique spiritual experience for the child. The outfit should complement this special day, not be its main focus. For this reason, all First Communion outfits available from MK Maryla are elegant and striking, yet modest, honoring the significance of the First Holy Communion liturgy.
