First Holy Communion begins many months before the ceremony itself. It requires a great deal of preparation, not only on the part of the child but also on the part of the parent. Starting in September, parishes begin the spiritual preparation of the child to receive the sacrament. This preparation takes two parallel forms: children are prepared during catechism classes in elementary school, while parents attend lectures organized by the parish.
First Communion in Various European Countries
First Communions most often take place in May—the month dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin Mary. However, this is not a rule—First Communions are sometimes held as early as April. In Western Europe, the timing varies even further—for example, in Germany, First Communions are most often held in April, and in France, in June.
Preparing for First Holy Communion is therefore a major logistical undertaking, requiring considerable organizational skills from parents. This includes teaching prayers, preparing the church, organizing the family celebration, and purchasing devotional items.
Spiritual Preparation of Children
Children wishing to receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion must demonstrate adequate substantive preparation and an understanding of the essence of the sacrament. Canon 912 of the Code of Canon Law states: “Children may be admitted to Holy Communion when they possess sufficient discernment and have been thoroughly prepared, so that, in accordance with their capacity, they may understand the mystery of Christ and receive the Body of Christ with faith and devotion.” Children should therefore understand the purpose of the institution of the sacrament and of receiving Holy Communion and going to Confession. In an exceptional situation, when a child is in danger of death (Latin: “in periculo mortis”), it is sufficient for the child to be able to distinguish the Body of the Lord from ordinary bread.
Parents’ Mental Preparation
The role of parents is not only to prepare their children—it is also to prepare themselves to raise their children in the spirit of Jesus’ teachings. Adults should understand that their daily behavior is the best way for a child to experience God in their life. Patience, strengthening the marital relationship, the value of confession, participation in the Mass, and support during difficult times are the best ways to demonstrate the importance of this sacrament.
Organizing First Communion
Every child receiving First Communion should have a rosary, a candle (often the baptismal candle is used), a small box for keeping the host, and a medal. You can find them here. Liturgical vestments are also an essential part of the ceremony. Liturgical vestments are usually custom-made for each child, which is why fittings for First Communion groups often take place even before Christmas.
Choosing a venue for the family celebration is also a logistical challenge. Since most First Communions take place around the same time, the best venues often reserve spaces for this celebration even several years before the actual First Communion!
Let’s not let this drive us crazy.
Let’s remember, however, that the most important element of First Holy Communion is welcoming God into the heart of a young Christian. Everything else is merely a backdrop. We hope that, thanks to our outfits, that backdrop will be very visually appealing ;)
